Isaiah 44:18

"They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand."

This verse from Isaiah refers to those people who worship idols. It says that these people know nothing and they understand nothing. They are also not aware of the truth because they cannot see and their minds are closed so they cannot understand.

In reading the Bible, I have learned that one of the sins that God really hates is idolatry. It has been an ancient thing that has not been erased until now. The problem is idolatry has actually become worse. I am not only talking about the idolatry in the form of worshipping images of God but idolatry in the form of putting other people or material things before God.

In this modern world, one of the sins we commit is idolatry. In fact, most of us are not even aware of it. If we become true to ourselves, we would realize that nowadays, people put the things of this world above God.

Teenagers would rather spend their time sending text messages or calling each other thru their mobile phones than praying. Instead of praying before they sleep, the last thing they do is usually text their friends or their crushes. It is unfortunate but the youth nowadays would be much more willing to spend their time online, posting on Facebook or tweeting on Twitter than read the Bible. It seems as if the advancements in technology have actually made us, especially, the young ones, less close to God.

As for the adults, every career-oriented person has been striving for success in this fast-paced society. They usually spend their time at work, stressing themselves out just so they can get promotion and receive a higher salary. They think that having the best position in their companies and getting a competitive income would help them attain happiness.

The things I have tackled above are forms of idolatry. We have different idols these days, electronic gadgets, the internet, and money. What we do not realize is that the happiness we get from those things is actually just temporary while the joy God can give us is everlasting.

We should not be blind and ignorant. Let us not be like the idol-makers in Isaiah. We should learn to arrange our priorities accordingly to have a better life. Aside from not worshiping other forms of God, we should not also put too much of our time and exert much of our effort on worldly things and neglect God. The Lord should be number one in our lives. Making Him our top priority shows that we have open eyes and open mind. Moreover, as we prioritize the Lord, He would also prioritize us and bless us more.
